Medium Term Accommodation (MTA) plays a crucial role in supporting NDIS participants during housing transitions. As NDIS Accommodation Specialists, we frequently guide healthcare professionals and NDIS support coordinators through eligibility requirements.
Here’s your comprehensive guide to understanding MTA eligibility.
What is Medium Term Accommodation (MTA)?
Medium Term Accommodation supports NDIS participants to transition from hospital or other settings while waiting for permanent housing solutions. MTA typically spans 90 days with potential extensions for certain cases.
Common Eligibility Scenarios:
- Hospital discharge requiring accessible interim accommodation
- Waiting for home modifications completion
- Transitioning between housing arrangements
- Awaiting SDA availability
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for MTA, you must meet all three of these criteria:
- Have a confirmed long-term home you’ll be moving into
- Be unable to move in yet because your disability supports aren’t ready
- Be unable to stay in your current accommodation while waiting
Your long-term home could be:
- Your own home after modifications are completed
- A rental property waiting for disability-related modifications
- A supported independent living arrangement
- Other disability-specific housing
Special Circumstances
Hospital Discharge
If you’re being discharged from hospital and are eligible for:
- Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)
- Supported Independent Living (SIL)
- Individualised Living Options (ILO)
- Home Modifications
You may be able to access MTA without having a confirmed long-term home. Staff, including NDIS health liaison officers, may work with your hospital discharge team to coordinate supports.
